My career makes more sense as a body of work than a list of jobs.
For a long time I saw my jobs as separate chapters. Then I noticed I kept solving versions of the same problems.
A company’s identity doesn’t match what people experience. → Jackmont Hospitality
An important goal has no useful target. → 1,000 People. 78 Days. $360,000.
A relationship has become transactional. → How Much Do You Need Today?
Each case shows what I noticed, what I decided, and what I'd do differently next time.
Where my standard came from
I was about 20, working at a Jackmont airport restaurant during a private event for a wedding party. Someone handed me a tray of water glasses, filled and dripping. I carried it straight into the room. No cocktail napkins. Just wet glass.
I offered one to an older woman in the bride’s party. Her face said everything. The problem wasn’t the water. It was how I handed it to her.
I apologized, went back out, and started over with a dry tray.
I meant well. Meaning well wasn’t enough.
Competence is luxury. Warm competence is hospitality.
What shapes my thinking

Praying for Sheetrock by Melissa Fay Greene
It shows systems that are still running today, mostly unspoken and almost never questioned.
